Bikes with built-in batteries could help combat climate change
The next generation of bikes could help fight climate change by having a built-up battery inside, a new study has suggested.
The report by University of Queensland professor of mechanical engineering and engineering physics, Michael Hsu, suggests the next generation bike could be able to run for long periods without needing to recharge.
“We are going to see a range of bikes, from the smaller all-electric bikes, which are going into the home, to the large all-converging bikes, such as the Bmx bike, which have been developed to go really, really fast,” Professor Hsu said.
“The Bmx is a big, very efficient, compact bike that can be used for commuting.
So, this would be a very nice, really low-cost, portable battery for the Bikes.”
The study was published in the journal Advanced Materials.
The battery would be built into the frame and could be connected to the bike’s electrical system through a cable.
“If you put in a solar panel, it could run all the way up to 20 per cent off the battery charge, so you can have a very sustainable cycle,” Professor Hu said.
Professor Hsu also said the batteries could also be used in the construction industry.
“There’s a whole field of battery technologies that we think could be used, such that you could have a bike that is designed to run on battery power, so it’s a really lightweight bike,” he said.
He said the battery could also provide electricity to other devices.
“So, for example, if you have an energy storage system, you could store that energy for use in the future, or for use during other processes, or you could use it to charge a battery or an electronic device,” he added.
“What we think is interesting about this is that we can think about all of these things in terms of energy storage, and what we don’t know is, how do we actually store it in a way that can actually be used by the batteries in the vehicle?”
Professor Hsi said the study would also examine the potential of using the batteries to power devices that needed to run continuously, such a medical scanner.
“I think that’s going to be very interesting,” he concluded.
